BRIEF
The client wanted to create a social space with a thriving night life for people from everywhere to come together and celebrate their time. This bar expresses the clients aims with a contextual design, and the main piece is the bar itself: the fulcrum of this social center. The second floor of the building adds a whole new layer with a more laid back environment, allowing for a more relaxed experience.
The Concept
The MJMDA team was given an old structure with authentic features. As the team peeled back the old layers of this dated structure, a detailed and interesting skeletal frame (structural elements) was exposed.
The original beams and features were used as the grid upon which all design elements were added. The beams were like ribs, growing into a once was lifeform, whose layers were peeled. The layers in the skin receding to expose the layers within. Additional ribs aligned to the original building fabric created the shelves and supports to held up the skin, as well as propped up the spirits. And as the carcass lay there, what remains is the spirit that brings to all those that visit a taste of ichor.
